Failure to Yield Leaves One Dead and One Seriously Injured |
TROOP C - NEWS RELEASE September 8, 2015
Failure to Yield Leaves One Dead and One Seriously Injured Raceland, LA- Troopers investigated a two vehicle fatality crash on US 90 next to the Presto Fuel Center today. The crash occurred shortly before noon and claimed the life of a 63 year old Cut Off man. Another driver was seriously injured and was airlifted to a New Orleans area hospital.
The investigation revealed that a 2003 Jaguar XTY was traveling east on US 90 approaching the Presto Fuel Center in Lafourche Parish. The Jaguar was being driven by Keifer Bonvillain (age 45) of Houma, LA. As the Jaguar was traveling east, a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pulled out of a private driveway belonging to the Presto Fuel Center and attempted to cross the eastbound lanes of US 90. The Silverado pulled into the path of the Jaguar, which struck the Silverado on the driver’s side. The Silverado was being driven by Steven Galliano (age 63) of Cut Off, LA. Galliano, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. Bonvillain, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans with serious injuries. Impairment is unknown at this time. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Galliano. A blood sample was taken from Bonvillain and the test results will be pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers remind motorists to always look and make sure it is clear before pulling out into traffic. Always watch vehicles as they approach and gauge the distance they are covering as they approach. Never try and “make it” across when it is unsafe to do so. Keep distractions to a minimum and keep your focus on the road. It only takes a fraction of a second for a crash to occur. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
