TROOP C NEWS RELEASE
May 27, 2016
Single Vehicle Crash Kills One In Terrebonne Parish

Chauvin Shortly after 4:00 pm this afternoon, Troopers from Troop C began investigating a single-vehicle fatality crash on LA 56 just south of LA 58. The crash took the life of 90 year old Hazel Scott of Chauvin, LA.

The preliminary investigation revealed Velma Dehart, 86 year old of Chauvin, LA, was driving a 2000 Mazda 626 southbound on LA 56 near the Dollar General Store. For unknown reasons, Dehart ran off of the road to the right and entered a ditch where she struck a drainage culvert. Dehart received minor injuries. Her front seat passenger, 60 year old Sandra Scott of Chauvin, LA, also received minor injuries. Scott was in the right rear passenger seat and sustained fatal injuries. She was pronounced deceased by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office.

Impairment is not suspected as a factor in the crash; however, a standard toxicology sample was obtained from Dehart for testing. The results are pending. All three occupants were wearing their seatbelts during the crash.

While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.
