TROOP A NEWS RELEASE May 29, 2014 Two Denham Springs Men Killed in Iberville Parish Fatal Crash Plaquemine – Shortly before 9:15 pm on May 28, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle double fatality crash that occurred on LA Hwy 1148 west of LA Hwy 1 in Iberville Parish. The crash took the lives of 53 year old Charles K. Pope and 52 year old Maurice A. Cormier, both of Denham Springs, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Pope was driving a 2004 Ford F-150 westbound on LA Hwy 1148. For unknown reasons Pope lost control of his vehicle causing it to run off the roadway to the right. After leaving the roadway the Ford spun and struck a tree, then reentered the roadway and caught on fire. Both Pope and Cormier suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Pope was properly restrained, however; Cormier was not wearing a seatbelt. Driver impairment is unknown at this time, and a toxicology sample was taken from Pope and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Contact Information: | |||
