Impairment Suspected in Fiery Crash that Killed Driver and 7 Year Old in West Baton Rouge Parish

Rougon, LA – Shortly after 1:00 am on October 15, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash on LA 984 south of LA 983 in West Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 49 year old Javone Reed of Bossier City, LA and 7 year old Audrey Bacon of Port Allen, LA.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Reed was traveling northbound on LA 984 in a 2007 Mercedes Benz S550. Reed failed to negotiate a left hand curve and ran off the right side of the roadway. Reed’s vehicle struck a utility pole and a culvert before beginning to overturn. Reed and his front seat passenger, 25 year old Elizabeth Bacon of Port Allen, LA, were both ejected from the vehicle. The vehicle then caught fire with Audrey Bacon still inside.

Both Reed and Audrey Bacon sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. They were pronounced deceased at the scene by the West Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office. Elizabeth Bacon sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital. Reed and Elizabeth Bacon were not restrained at the time of the crash. It is unknown if Audrey Bacon was properly restrained. Impairment is suspected to be a factor in this crash and a toxicology sample was taken from Reed for analysis.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
