Head-on Collision takes Life of Marrero Man

Bridge City, LA – Yesterday evening at 9:33 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 18 (Bridge City Avenue) near its intersection with Oak Avenue on the Westbank of Jefferson Parish.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 1993 Ford F-150 pickup truck was traveling west on LA 18 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed the centerline of the roadway. Upon entering the eastbound lane of LA 18, the Ford pickup impacted a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu in a head-on collision. After impact, the pickup overturned and came to rest off road in a ditch.

The driver of the Ford F-150, Wilbert Howard (B/M age 49) of Marrero, LA, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office.

Both driver and front seat passenger in the Chevrolet Malibu, Claudia Robinson (B/F age 53) of Angie, LA and Billy Gatlin (B/M age 50) of Tylertown, MS, were transported to West Jefferson Medical Center with moderate injuries. Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Driver impairment is unknown at this time pending the results of a toxicology exam.

In 2010, approximately 59% of the fatalities experienced on Louisiana highways were unrestrained at the time of the crash. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
