Early Morning Crash on I-10 Claims One Life

Troop B: This morning, shortly after 2:00 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of a motor vehicle crash on I-10 west at mile post 217 in St. Charles Parish. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2000 Nissan Frontier, driven by Jimmie Szabary (O/M, age 56) of Kenner, LA, was traveling in the right lane and struck a 2006 Ford 500 that was parked on the right shoulder. The Ford was unoccupied at the time of the crash. After striking the Ford, the Nissan spun across the right and left lanes and came to rest facing north. Then, a 2007 Toyota Camry, driven by Delcome Evans (B/M, age 32) of LaPlace, LA, who was traveling on I-10 west in the left lane, struck the right rear of the disabled Nissan. The Toyota then stuck the left curb and overturned.

Szabary was transported to River Parishes Hospital and later taken to the Interim LSU Public Hospital, Level 1 Trauma Center via Air Med. Szabary was pronounced dead at the trauma center. Evans was also transported to River Parishes Hospital with minor injuries. Troopers suspect drug impairment on Szabary. Toxicology results are pending the outcome of the autopsy.

While the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge motorists to remain vigilant while driving and remember that crashes are unexpected events. By taking precautionary steps including never driving impaired by drugs and/or alcohol or distracted and always obeying the laws of the road, motorists can substantially reduce their risk of being involved and/or injured in a crash.
