Braithwaite Man Killed in Motor Vehicle Crash in Plaquemines Parish

Troop B – This morning, at approximately 6:25 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a serious injury crash on LA 39 at Dean Drive. Preliminary investigation revealed a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Charles Thurman (W/M, age 17) of Braithwaite, LA, was traveling south on LA 39 and for unknown reasons Thurman lost control of the vehicle. The Jetta exited the road to the right and struck a utility pole, which caused the pole to break. Thurman was not wearing a seatbelt and he was transported to the Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center in critical condition. A passenger in the Jetta, Phillip Guillot (W/M, age 18) of Braithwaite, LA, was wearing a seatbelt and was also transported to the Trauma Center with moderate injuries.

At approximately 11:30 AM, Thurman died as a result of the injuries he sustained. Speed is believed to be a factor of the crash. It is unknown whether alcohol or drug impairment is a factor, however blood test results are pending. This is the 11th fatal crash that Troop B has investigated in 2011.

Louisiana law requires that EVERYONE in a motor vehicle buckle up, regardless of seating position. Unrestrained passengers in the rear seat are just as susceptible to injury and death as are front seat passengers. Unrestrained passengers also pose a threat to other passengers in the vehicle. During a crash, they can become deadly projectiles inside the vehicle and endanger everyone else in the vehicle.

Troopers would like to remind the public to ALWAYS buckle up, never drink and drive, and never get into the vehicle with an impaired driver. There have been several deaths across the state already this week, and there has been a common denominator in most of these deaths – lack of seat belt use. State Police is currently participating in the national “Click It or Ticket” program in an effort to raise awareness and increase seat belt use across the state.
