| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: May 31, 2011 **Special Event** Academy Sports & Outdoors Sponsors Child Safety Seat Installations and Inspections Troop B – On Saturday, June 4, 2011, from 12PM – 3PM, the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force, Academy Sports & Outdoors and the Jefferson Parish Bridge City Fire Station will be holding a FREE Child Safety Seat Installation and Inspection event at Academy Sports & Outdoors (800 South Clearview Parkway, Harahan, LA 70123) with the help of over thirty (30) statewide technicians. Numerous firefighters from across the Troop B area, including St. Bernard, Plaquemines, St. John and Jefferson Parishes, are attending a Child Safety Seat Certified Technician Course and will be participating in this event. The knowledge gained by the firefighters will allow them to safely and correctly teach parents how to install the child restraints in their respective areas and also decrease the injury and fatality rate of motor vehicle crashes. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children. Louisiana State Law requires the driver of a motor vehicle to ensure that EVERY child under the age of thirteen years in a motor vehicle equipped with safety belts is properly secured, regardless of seating position in the vehicle. Many deaths and injuries can be prevented by properly using child safety seats. The American Academy of Pediatrics has conducted research and found that children should be rear-facing until the age of two years. Child Safety Seat Technicians will be able to explain these new guidelines to parents / caregivers at this event. 96% of child safety seats are installed improperly. Some of the common misuses include improper placement of harness straps and retainer clip, LATCH mistakes, unlocked seatbelts, improper recline and not having the appropriate age/weight child restraint for the child. If the child is properly secured in the child restraint, the chances of serious injury or death are drastically decreased in a motor vehicle crash. Please come visit us this Saturday and let us teach you how to properly install your safety seat; please don’t take a chance with your child’s life! Buckle Up!! Seatbelts Save Lives!!
