Pedestrian Killed in Crash on US 90B

Troop B – On January 9, 2012, shortly before 7:00 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a crash involving a pedestrian on US 90B at Westwood Drive in Jefferson Parish. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by Sharlene Washington (B/F, age 19) of Destrehan, LA, was traveling east on US 90 at Westwood Drive in the right lane. A pedestrian, Doris Bitoun (W/F, age 53) of Marrero, LA, was attempting to cross the three eastbound lanes from the median and was not in a crosswalk. As Bitoun entered the right lane, she was struck by the Chevrolet and pronounced dead on the scene.

Speed and impairment are not suspected as factors of the crash, however the crash remains under investigation. Toxicology results for Bitoun are pending the outcome of an autopsy.

Louisiana State Police reminds pedestrians that State Law requires pedestrians to walk on a sidewalk if one is provided. If no sidewalk is provided pedestrians must walk on the left shoulder, or as far to the left side of the road as practical, against the flow of traffic. Troopers also recommend that pedestrians wear light colored or reflective clothing if walking on the road between dusk and dawn or during times of inclement weather.
