Road Rage Leads to Injury Crash Involving Five Vehicles on I-55

Troop B – Yesterday, shortly before 5:00 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to an injury crash on I-55 north at mile post 5.5 in St. John the Baptist Parish. As a result of the crash investigation one driver, Richard Massey of Folsom, LA, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Obstruction of a Highway and Negligent Injuring.

During the course of the investigation, troopers found that Massey was driving a 2003 Toyota Tundra on I-55 north and was involved in a road rage incident with a 2009 Freightliner tractor trailer driven by Thomas Higgins of Ponchatoula, LA. Massey was upset because the Freightliner was dropping rocks from the trailer onto the roadway. Massey attempted to stop the Freightliner on several occasions and finally pulled his Tundra in front of the Freightliner in the left lane and stopped abruptly. Higgins was attempting to move around the Tundra as Massey was approaching him in an irate manner.

A 2001 Chevrolet Pick-Up, driven by Dustin Anzalone of Hammond, LA, was traveling in the left lane of I-55 and struck the rear of the Freightliner, causing the Pick-Up to cross over the right lane and impact a 2007 Toyota Tundra, driven by Norwood Willie of Denham Springs, LA. Then a 1996 Chevrolet Caprice, driven by Daoren Roberts of Angie, LA, struck the rear of Willie’s Tundra in the right lane.

Anzalone was airlifted to North Oaks Hospital with moderate injuries. I-55 north at I-10 west was closed for over three hours due to the injury crash investigation. There were no other injuries reported at the time of the crash. Massey was booked into the St. John the Baptist Parish Jail.

As the holiday season approaches, Louisiana State Police would like to remind the public that driving aggressively, impaired, distracted and unrestrained can lead to motor vehicle crashes that can be life altering and deadly. “This crash is an example of how people’s tempers can lead to a very dangerous situation,” said Captain Carl Saizan, Commander of Troop B. “If you find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation, call the police and report the activity. We want to keep our roads safe for all motorists. 100% of crashes are preventable and we encourage all drivers to make good decisions behind the wheel.”

Motorists that witness hazardous situations and possibly impaired drivers are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
