TROOP A NEWS RELEASE September 3, 2014 Restrained Driver to be Honored for Surviving Motor Vehicle Crash Baton Rouge – On Thursday, September 4, 2014, Louisiana State Police, Baton Rouge City Police Department, and the Interim LSU Hospital will present a Baton Rouge teen with the “Saved by the Belt” Award on behalf of the Capital Region Transportation Safety Coalition. The award will be given to the recipient at 10:00 AM at Louisiana State Police Headquarters located at 7919 Independence Blvd. in Baton Rouge. The award recipient was recently involved in a crash in the Baton Rouge area. He made the decision to buckle up when he got into the vehicle, and that decision proved to be effective when his vehicle was hit by another driver. When a seat belt is worn properly, it not only prevents ejection from a vehicle but also greatly reduces the chances of sustaining significant injuries. During the presentation, photos and a description of the crash investigation will be available. Motor vehicle crashes are the single greatest cause of death and disability for people ages 1 to 34 and are the leading cause of injury related deaths among people of all ages. Last year, over 72,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes in Louisiana. Louisiana law requires all occupants, regardless of seating position, to be properly restrained.
