Pedestrian Killed in Crash in St. Charles Parish

Troop B – On November 5, 2011, shortly after 9:00 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a crash with injuries at US 61 (Airline Highway) south at James Drive. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2002 Toyota Camry, driven by Kay Barbin (W/F, age 66) of Kenner, LA, was traveling south on US 61 in the right lane. A pedestrian, Henri Emond (W/M, age 65) of Quebec, Canada, was struck by the Toyota after walking into the path of the vehicle. Emond was transported to Kenner Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Barbin voluntarily submitted to a breath analysis which revealed that there was no alcohol in her system. Impairment is suspected for Emond and a toxicology test is pending the autopsy.

This year, there have been several fatal pedestrian crashes across Louisiana. Most of these crashes have occurred at night, and many occurred in dark areas. Troopers would like to remind the public of the importance of pedestrian safety. There are several things pedestrians can do to increase safety and decrease the risk of being struck by a vehicle. It is very important that pedestrians wear light-colored or reflective clothing, walk against traffic flow, and cross the road only when it is safe to do so.
