Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: January 1, 2011 Crash in St. John the Baptist Parish Claims the Life of 5 Year Old Troop B – This morning, shortly before 10:00 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on I-55 south, just 0.3 miles north of I-10. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Mazda Tribute, driven by Steven Acosta (W/M, age 44) of Ponchatoula, LA, was traveling south on I-55 when Acosta lost control of the vehicle and struck the left guardrail. The vehicle then began to rotate counter-clockwise, rolled over several times and struck the right guardrail. There were two passengers in the vehicle: Shana Acosta (W/F, age 36) and Logan Young (W/M, age 5) both of Ponchatoula, LA. Young was transported to River Parishes Hospital and was later pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the crash. Steven and Shana Acosta were also transported to River Parishes Hospital with minor injuries. Steven Acosta submitted to a chemical test and impairment is not suspected. All occupants were properly restrained at the time of the crash. Speed and weather conditions are suspected to be contributing factors. The crash is still under investigation.
