Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: December 10, 2010 Pedestrian Killed in Crash on St. Bernard Highway Troop B – On Thursday, December 9, 2010 at approximately 5:40 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian at LA 46 (St. Bernard Hwy.) and Ventura Drive in Chalmette, LA. The crash involved a 2010 Dodge Avenger, driven by Travaun C. Major (B/M, age 24) of Chalmette, LA and a pedestrian, Lydia Beltaken Fairlough (O/F, age 59) of Chalmette, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that the Dodge was traveling southbound on LA 46. The pedestrian was crossing LA 46 east to west at the intersection of Ventura Drive and LA 46, using a wheelchair for support while walking. The pedestrian stepped into the southbound lane of LA 46 from the center turning lane, into the path of the Dodge. The Dodge struck the wheelchair supporting Fairlough. Fairlough was pronounced dead on the scene. Speed and impairment are not suspected as factors in the crash. However, blood results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime for Major and toxicology results are pending the autopsy for Fairlough. No criminal charges have been filed at this time; the crash remains under investigation.
