Louisiana State Police Participate in Operation Lifesaver Throughout Southeast Louisiana

Today, Louisiana State Police Troopers from Troop A, Troop B and Troop L partnered with numerous law enforcement agencies throughout southeast Louisiana in an effort to educate the citizens about railroad safety. Troopers rode on the Kansas City Southern Railway Company, Canadian National Railway Company and the Union Pacific Railroad throughout several parishes including Ascension Parish, St. John the Baptist Parish, St. Charles Parish, Jefferson Parish and Tangipahoa Parish. Joint enforcement efforts targeted motorists who ignored railroad crossing warning signals as a train approached and other related traffic laws.

Throughout the five participating parishes, 232 traffic citations were issued for railroad crossing violations, unrestrained drivers and occupants, and various other traffic laws. Law enforcement officials typically observe an increase in traffic during the holiday season. In addition, some motorists are preoccupied with holiday activities and may be short on patience - a combination that can result in deadly consequences. As you travel the highways and approach railroad crossings, use extreme vigilance and pay particular attention to railroad warning signals.

Last year, 11 people in Louisiana lost their lives in vehicle crashes with trains. This was the sixth highest number of such fatalities in the nation. Louisiana state law requires motorists to obey signals at railroad crossings that indicate an approaching train including flashing red lights and lowered gates. Failure to obey these signals may result in a $200.00 fine and 30 days in jail for a first offense with higher fines and increased jail time for additional violations. The fine for racing a train is $1,000.
