TROOP A NEWS RELEASE September 6, 2014 Driver Killed in Fatal Crash Involving a Garbage Truck on LA Hwy 415 Port Allen – Shortly before 6:30 am on September 6, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 415 north LA Hwy 76 (Rosedale Rd.) in West Baton Parish. The crash took the life of 59 year old Frederick Brown, Jr. of Port Allen. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Brown was driving a 2014 Kia Soul northbound on LA Hwy 415. At the same time, 55 year old Nathaniel Sheperd of Baton Rouge was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of LA Hwy 415 from a stop sign to enter a median opening in a 2006 Mack garbage truck. As Sheperd was entering the median opening, Brown’s Kia struck the left rear corner of the garbage truck. As a result the Kia crossed over the median and the southbound lanes of travel before coming to rest in a ditch on the west side of the roadway. Despite the fact that he was properly restrained at the time of the crash, Brown suffered fatal injuries. Sheperd was properly restrained and was uninjured. Driver impairment is not suspected on the part of either driver; however, toxicology samples were taken from both and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seat belt use. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up.
