Louisiana State Police Encourage Responsible Driving during the Holiday Weekend

Troop BAs the Easter Holiday weekend and spring break approaches, Louisiana State Police Troop B would like to remind motorists of the importance of safe driving, good decisions behind the wheel and proper restraint use for all occupants of motor vehicles. Louisiana state law requires ALL occupants in a motor vehicle to be properly restrained. Children must be in an age and weight appropriate child restraint. If you would like a child safety seat technician to ensure that you are using the appropriate child restraint and how to install the seat correctly, you can visit the www.LSP.org website for a list of stations and available times. In addition, Troop B sponsors a free child safety seat fitting station every Wednesday from 1 PM – 4 PM (excluding holidays), no appointment is necessary.

As you drive to and from your destination, troopers encourage drivers to minimize their distractions in the vehicle, including cell phones, GPS devices, and eating. Louisiana law prohibits drivers from writing, reading, or sending text messages and email on communication devices. It also prohibits drivers under the age of 18 from using a cell phone while driving, which includes hands free devices.

Troopers will be aggressively patrolling Louisiana’s roadways in an effort to remove impaired drivers. Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is illegal and will not be tolerated. In 2010, 42% of fatal crashes in Louisiana were the result of impaired driving. “We want to prevent injury and fatal crashes from occurring,” said Captain Carl Saizan, Commander of Troop B. “The community can help us remove impaired drivers from the roads by calling *LSP if they observe hazardous motorists. Also, please make good decisions before you get behind the wheel and take the keys away from impaired friends attempting to drive. When law enforcement and the community work together we can make a difference and save lives.”

If you plan on traveling this holiday weekend, state police encourages you to drive safely and plan your trip accordingly. Monitor the weather conditions for the area you are traveling through. For information regarding road closures, you may visit www.511LA.org or call 511 for information. Drivers are encouraged to check their vehicles fluid levels, tires, and other required vehicle equipment to make sure they can make it to their destination safely. While traveling, should your vehicle experience a problem requiring you to pull off the road, you may call *LSP (*577) and state police can help you find the appropriate assistance.

Louisiana State Police wants everyone to enjoy a safe holiday weekend. Please obey the laws, drive sober, ensure that everyone is buckled up and be responsible.
