TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

Date: March 9, 2011
Louisiana Statistical Data for Mardi Gras 2011

Troop B Carnival 2011 brought hundreds of thousands of people into the City of New Orleans, as well as 125 Louisiana State Troopers from across the state. Troopers were assigned throughout the French Quarter and Central Business District areas in an effort to supplement the New Orleans Police Department, protect the citizens and ensure the safety of parade goers.

Troopers assisted over 21,000 people during the Mardi Gras weekend and answered over 400 calls for service from the public. Ten (10) hand guns were seized off of individuals on Bourbon Street and Troopers made 16 felony arrests, seven (7) of which were related to narcotics. Troopers also arrested over 56 individuals for various crimes, including DWI and simple possession of narcotics.

“Our public safety efforts for Mardi Gras 2011 were centered around partnerships and proactive, aggressive enforcement. Through the support of Governor Jindal and the commitment of Mayor Landrieu and Chief Serpas, these efforts began well before the official start of the Mardi Gras weekend with proactive investigations and public awareness," said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. "Troopers along with their NOPD counterparts worked tirelessly to identify individuals’ intent on disrupting the Mardi Gras spirit. Their efforts contributed to one of the safest Mardi Gras weekends on record while seeing some of the largest crowds in recent history. Our enforcement efforts will continue as we remain committed to assisting our law enforcement partners throughout the New Orleans Metropolitan area.”
