| TROOP A NEWS RELEASE September 30, 2016 Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Vehicle in Iberville Parish Crash Plaquemine, LA – Shortly after 7:00 am on September 30, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash involving a pedestrian on LA 1148 west of LA 1 in Iberville Parish. The crash took the life of 56 year old Ervin Sparrow of Brusly, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Sparrow stopped his 2000 Chevrolet Silverado in the eastbound lane of LA 1148 to adjust the equipment in the back of his vehicle. At the same time, 33 year old Ashley Erwin of Plaquemine, LA was traveling eastbound on LA 1148 in a 2011 Toyota Camry. As Sparrow was walking back to the driver’s side of his vehicle, Erwin began to pass Sparrow’s vehicle on the left in a marked passing zone. For unknown reasons, Sparrow attempted to run across the westbound lane as Erwin was passing. The front left side of Erwin’s vehicle struck Sparrow in the westbound lane. Sparrow sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office. Erwin was properly restrained and was not injured. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from both Sparrow and Erwin for analysis.
