TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE April 10, 2013 Garyville, LA Woman Killed in Crash on Airline Highway This morning, at approximately 4:40 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a fatal crash on US 61 south at LA 637. Rebranda Steib (W/F, age 40) of Garyville, LA was pronounced dead on the scene after being struck by a tractor trailer. Preliminary investigation revealed that Steib was exiting a private parking lot in a 2001 Ford Mustang and was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of US 61. She entered into the path of a 2004 International tanker, driven by Michael Payne (W/M, age 48) of Amite, LA, in the right lane of US 61 south. The Mustang was struck on the driver’s side and Steib suffered fatal injuries. Driver impairment is not suspected for Payne and toxicology results are pending an autopsy for Steib. The crash remains under investigation. Motorists should remain vigilant at all times when behind the wheel of a vehicle. When entering a roadway, drivers should look both directions and only proceed when safe to do so. Crashes can occur at any time, therefore avoid all distractions while driving, pay attention to other vehicles on the road and remain defensive, always buckle up and make sure passengers are buckled, do not speed and drive sober. Crashes occur because of driver error and decisions made behind the wheel. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
