Early Morning Crash on I-10 Claims the Life of Kenner Man

This morning, shortly after 2:00 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a fatal crash on I-10 east at Cleary Avenue in Jefferson Parish. The crash involved three vehicles and claimed the life of Mauricio Vega (W/M, age 50) of Kenner, LA.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Vega was driving a 2002 Toyota Camry on I-10 east when his vehicle became disabled in the left lane due to mechanical issues. Vega exited his vehicle and opened the hood of the Toyota. A 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, driven by Erik Francois (B/M, age 19) of LaPlace, La, was also traveling in the left lane and, as it approached the Toyota, attempted to avoid the vehicle by steering to the left. However, the Chevrolet struck the rear of the Toyota and struck Mr.Vega. A 2009 Freightliner tractor/trailer, driven by Edward Wiggins (B/M, age 44) of Charlotte, NC, was traveling in the left center lane of I-10 east approaching Cleary Avenue. As the Chevrolet struck the Toyota, it pushed the Toyota toward the left center lane. In an attempt to avoid the Toyota, the Freightliner swerved onto the left shoulder striking the rear of the Toyota and the rear of the Chevrolet. Vega was pronounced dead on the scene. Wiggins sustained minor injuries and was transported to East Jefferson Hospital. Francois did not sustain injuries.

Impairment is unknown for Vega and toxicology results are pending an autopsy. Francois submitted to a chemical test and no alcohol was detected in his system. A blood sample was collected from Wiggins and results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorists need to remain vigilant at all times while behind the wheel of a vehicle. Always be aware of your surrounding and pay attention to what is happening ahead of your vehicle. Road conditions can change very quickly with the onset of weather related conditions. Slow down when driving through bad weather which will allow you to stop your vehicle or avoid hazards more safely.
