TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE February 14, 2013 Louisiana Statistical Data for Mardi Gras 2013 New Orleans – Carnival 2013 brought hundreds of thousands of people into the City of New Orleans, as well as approximately 130 Louisiana State Troopers from across the state. Troopers were assigned throughout the French Quarter and Central Business District areas in an effort to supplement the New Orleans Police Department, protect the citizens and ensure the safety of parade goers. Troopers assisted over 4,500 people during the Mardi Gras weekend and answered over 50 calls for service from the public. Twenty-two (22) hand guns were seized off of individuals in the French Quarter and Troopers made twenty (20) felony arrests, fourteen (14) of which were related to narcotics. Troopers also arrested over 125 juveniles and adults for various crimes, including curfew violations and simple possession of narcotics. “Our public safety efforts for Mardi Gras 2013 were centered around partnerships and proactive, aggressive enforcement,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “Our continued efforts and commitment to the City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Police Department began before Super Bowl and extended through Mardi Gras. Troopers and our NOPD partners worked tirelessly to identify individuals’ intent on disrupting the festivities. One of our main focuses was to take illegal weapons off of the streets and protect the visitors and citizens of our state.
