TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE April 21, 2013 Overnight Crash Claims Life of Gramercy, LA Man Last night, at approximately 12:25 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash in St. John the Baptist Parish on US 61 (Airline Highway) south near LA 54. The crash claimed the life of Cleveland Parquette III (B/M, age 27) of Gramercy, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that Parquette was driving a 2002 GMC Envoy on US 61 south in the right lane approaching LA 54. Another vehicle, 1994 Lincoln Towncar driven by Colen Johnson (B/M, age 25) of Gramercy, LA, was traveling on US 61 in the right lane ahead of the Envoy. For unknown reasons, the Envoy struck the rear of the Towncar. The Towncar rotated clockwise and ran off the road to the right. The Envoy lost control and began rolling over several times beyond the right shoulder. As the Envoy was rolling, Parquette was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene. Johnson and a front seat passenger in the Towncar received minor injuries. Speed and impairment are unknown factors at this time. A toxicology test is pending an autopsy for Parquette. The crash remains under investigation. The proper use of occupant protection systems, including seat belts and air bags, can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. The primary purpose of a seat belt is to prevent ejection. It is imperative that an occupant remain in the seating position and the only way to ensure this is to wear a seat belt. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
