TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE August 20, 2013 “Saved by the Belt” Award Presented to an Individual Who Survived a Serious Motor Vehicle Crash On Wednesday, August 21, 2013, Louisiana State Police and the Interim LSU Hospital, Level 1 Trauma Center will present the “Saved by the Belt” Award on behalf of the New Orleans Regional Traffic Safety Coalition. The award will be given to the recipient at 12:00 PM at the Regional Transportation Management Center located at 100 Veterans Memorial Boulevard, New Orleans, LA, 70124. On June 27, 2011, at approximately 1:50 PM, Charles Cavet of Belle Chasse, LA, was involved in a crash on LA 23 in Plaquemines Parish. The investigation revealed that a 2005 Toyota Camry was traveling northbound on LA 23 at approximately 73 MPH. The driver of the Camry struck the rear of the vehicle occupied by Mr. Charles Cavet. After the initial crash, the two vehicles traveled into the ditch. All three occupants of the Toyota Camry were unrestrained. The driver of the Camry was charged with DWI and Child Endangerment, First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injury (3 counts), Careless Operation, Unrestrained Child, No Seat Belt and Failure to Provide Insurance. Mr. Cavet sustained severe injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to the Interim LSU Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center. Mr. Cavet’s crash could have resulted in a fatality had Mr. Cavet been unrestrained, however his injuries were minimized through the proper use of the seat belt. The Louisiana State Police would like to remind the community that driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is illegal and can result in injuries and deaths. Driving under the influence of prescription medications can result in a DWI arrest, if the medication is responsible for driver impairment. Motor vehicle crashes are the single greatest cause of death and disability for people ages 1 to 34 and are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among people of all ages. Last year, approximately 72,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes in Louisiana. Louisiana law requires all occupants, regardless of seating position, to be properly restrained.
