TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE August 3, 2013 Early Morning Crash in Port Sulphur, LA Claims One Life This morning, shortly before 6:00 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of a fatal crash in Port Sulphur, LA located in Plaquemines Parish. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 Ford F150, driven by Alec St. Ann (B/M, age 48) of Port Sulphur, LA, was traveling on LA 23 south in the right lane near Milan Drive. The Ford F150 began to slow down and St. Ann was preparing to make a right turn and was struck from the rear by a 2006 Ford Ranger, driven by Martin Richard Jr. (B/M, age 28) of Lafayette, LA. The impact caused the Ford F150 to veer to the left and strike the curb. The Ford F150 then rolled to the right and struck a utility pole with the roof of the vehicle. Alec St. Ann was pronounced dead on the scene. A passenger in the Ford F150, Keith Metz (B/M, age 36) of Port Sulphur, LA, and Richard Jr. were not wearing seat belts. Metz was ejected from the vehicle and suffered minor injuries. Richard Jr. also suffered minor injuries and both were transported to Ochsner Medical Center Westbank. Impairment is not suspected at this time however, a blood specimen was taken from Richard Jr. and will be processed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Toxicology results on Alec St. Ann are pending an autopsy. Speed is believed to be a factor of the crash. Criminal charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. Louisiana State Police would like to remind motorists to remain vigilant at all times when behind the wheel. Making poor decisions in a vehicle such as driving impaired, driving while fatigued, driving distracted or not wearing a seat belt leads to serious injuries and deaths every day across the state. Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death. Motorists that witness hazardous situations and/or reckless drivers are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
