TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE

July 17, 2013
“Saved by the Belt” Award Presented to Individuals Who Survived Three Vehicle Crash

This morning, Louisiana State Police and the Interim LSU Hospital, Level 1 Trauma Center will present the “Saved by the Belt” Award on behalf of the New Orleans Regional Traffic Safety Coalition. The award will be given to the recipients at 12:00 PM at the Regional Transportation Management Center located at 100 Veterans Memorial Boulevard, New Orleans, LA, 70124.

On May 22, 2013, at approximately 5:45 PM, Norman and Susan Ross of LaPlace, LA, were involved in a crash on LA 22 in Ascension Parish. The investigation revealed that a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche was traveling east on LA 22 at approximately 55 MPH. The driver of the Avalanche applied the brakes when the vehicle went through a small amount of standing water on the roadway. The driver lost control of the Avalanche, crossed the center line and struck the 2009 Toyota Corolla that the Ross’ occupied. The Avalanche continued out of control and struck a 2001 Ford F-150. Both the Corolla and F150 were pushed into a nearby ditch. Through investigation it was determined that three of the tires on the Avalanche were severely worn and the driver was cited for Careless Operation and No Driver’s License. Only minor injuries were reported at the time of the crash, due to the fact that the Ross’ were both properly seat belted. This particular crash could have resulted in a serious injury or fatality, however because the occupants were buckled, their injuries were greatly minimized.

Motor vehicle crashes are the single greatest cause of death and disability for people ages 1 to 34 and are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among people of all ages. Last year, approximately 72,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes in Louisiana. Crashes can happen at any time, on any day and the only chance of surviving a horrific crash is to Buckle Up.

**All media outlets are invited to attend the “Saved by the Belt” Presentation**
