TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE July 14, 2013 Speed, Impairment and Lack of Seat Belt Use Causes Fatal Crash in St. Bernard Parish Last night, shortly after 10:30 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash in St. Bernard Parish. The deceased, a passenger in a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, was identified as Victor Major, B/M, age 46, of Violet, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that the Camaro was traveling at a high rate of speed on LA 39 north, near mile post 36.3. The Camaro ran off the road to the right into a ditch, causing the vehicle to overturn and strike a residence. The driver, Samuel Hampton Jr. (B/M, age 38) of Violet, LA, was wearing a seat belt and was transported to the Interim LSU Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center with moderate injuries. Impairment is suspected as a factor of the crash and blood was taken from Hampton Jr. and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Major was the front seat passenger and was unrestrained at the time of the crash. He was partially ejected and pronounced dead on the scene. Three juvenile passengers, ages 4, 10 and 11, were wearing seat belts in the rear seat. All three juveniles were transported to the Level 1 Trauma Center with moderate injuries. Criminal charges are pending at this time for Samuel Hampton Jr. and the crash remains under investigation. Louisiana’s Vehicular Homicide law is defined as the killing of a human being caused proximately or caused directly by an offender engaged in the operation of any motor vehicle when the operator's blood alcohol concentration is 0.08 percent or more. Troopers and first responders witness far too often the costs of driving while impaired, lack of seat belt use, and making poor decisions while behind the wheel. This fatal combination often leads to life changing consequences for everyone involved.
