This morning, shortly before 2:00 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B was notified of a fatal crash on US 61 at LA 627 in St. Charles Parish. Five people were involved in the crash, three of which died while two are in critical condition.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Jennifer Englade (W/F, age 40) of LaPlace, LA was operating a 2006 Pontiac G6 northbound on US 61 and for unknown reasons crossed the raised median . As the Pontiac entered the southbound lanes of travel, the Pontiac was struck on its right side by a 2001 Honda Civic, driven by Romishe Mejia-Fequier (O/F, age 23) of Harvey, LA. Englade was wearing a seat belt and was transported to the Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center. Romishe Mejia-Fequier was pronounced dead on the scene. She was wearing a seat belt.

Joshua Jones (W/M, age 29) of Sulphur, LA, was the front seat passenger in the Pontiac. He was not wearing a seat belt and, upon impact, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene. Mejia Medena (B/M, age 20) of Harvey, La, was the front seat passenger of the Honda. He was wearing a seat belt and sustained critical injuries and was transported to the Level 1 Trauma Center. Esther Centeno (O/F, age 20) of Bridge City, LA, was the right rear passenger in the Honda and was pregnant. Esther Centeno was wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Speed and impairment are suspected as factors of the crash. Blood was drawn from Englade and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for toxicology analysis. Impairment is not suspected for Romishe Mejia-Fequier however toxicology results are pending an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation and criminal charges are pending.

Troopers wish to remind drivers that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Thousands of lives are lost around our country each year due to impaired driving. Prior to putting alcohol into your body, ensure that you have a plan in place in order to get home safely. Designated drivers, taxi cabs, staying where you are, calling a sober friend are all suggestions to avoid driving impaired. Troopers will continue to enforce Louisiana’s DWI laws across the state and remain committed to a public education campaign to end impaired driving.

Motorists that witness possibly impaired drivers and/or hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
