17-Year Old Bicyclist Killed in Crash in St. Bernard Parish

On May 20, 2013 at approximately 1:40 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a crash with injury on LA 39 east near Deer Creek Street in St. Bernard Parish. The crash involved 17 year old Chase Naquin of Arabi, LA.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Naquin was riding a Huffy mountain bicycle on LA 39 near Deer Creek Street. Naquin was heading west on the eastbound shoulder against traffic and for unknown reasons turned into the eastbound lanes of travel. Naquin was struck in the left lane by a 2006 Ford Fusion, driven by Katy Alfonso (W/F, age 30) of Violet, LA. Naquin was transported to the Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center with serious injuries. Alfonso was not injured in the crash. Naquin was pronounced dead at approximately 9:00 PM on May 20, 2013, due to the injuries he sustained.

Speed and impairment are not considered factors of the crash. The crash remains under investigation.

According to Louisiana State Law, bicycles must travel in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic laws. Bicycles must also have a lamp mounted on the front that shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front. They shall also have a lamp mounted on the rear that will emit either a flashing or steady red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear. Remember to wear bright and reflective clothing when walking or bicycling at night. Also, Bicycle helmets are 85% effective in reducing total head and brain injuries. Bicycle helmets are the single most effective way to reduce fatalities due to head injuries. When wearing a bicycle helmet, make sure it fits snugly on your head and the clasp is locked.
