TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE May 12, 2013 Fatal Crash Claims the Lives of Two Unrestrained Juveniles Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated an early morning fatal crash in St. John the Baptist Parish that claimed the lives of two juveniles. The crash occurred at approximately 2:00 AM. Preliminary investigation revealed that Daris Scott (B/M age 37) of LaPlace, La, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro on LA 44, just east of LA 54. Scott lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons and ran off the road to the left and struck a tree. Daris Scott and front seat passenger Angel Scott (B/F age 37) of LaPlace, LA, were properly restrained and suffered minor injuries. Both were transported to Ochsner Hospital. Two rear seat passengers, Darquell Scott (age 10) and Daryell Johnson (age 15), were not wearing seat belts and were pronounced dead on the scene. Speed is considered as a factor of the crash. Impairment is unknown; blood was drawn from Daris Scott and a toxicology analysis will be conducted by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. The crash remains under investigation. Seat belts save lives every day when used properly. The primary function of the seat belt is to prevent an occupant from ejection. Crashes are extremely violent and the force placed on a person’s body can cause serious injury or death. A seat belt spreads those violent forces across the strongest bones in the body and allows the body to come to a stop by providing ride down. The usage of a seat belt will also limit brain and spinal cord injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
