Kenner Man Killed in Crash on Airline Highway

Last night, shortly after 9:00 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a serious injury crash that involved a pedestrian on US 61 (Airline Highway) near North Elm Street.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Saturn Vue, driven by Dennis Weidus (W/M, age 55) of Baton Rouge, LA, was traveling on US 61 north near North Elm Street in the right lane. A pedestrian, Chris Robertson (B/M, age 45) of Kenner, LA, began to cross US 61 in the path of the Saturn. Robertson was struck by the Saturn and transported to the Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center, where he later died due to the injuries he sustained.

Impairment and speed are not considered factors of the crash, however toxicology results are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

Troopers urge both motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Distraction, whether behind the wheel or as a pedestrian, decreases awareness and reaction time possibly leading to life changing consequences. Louisiana State Law requires pedestrians to utilize sidewalks where accessible or walk along the left shoulder as far away from the roadway as possible. Pedestrians should walk against the flow of traffic, wear light colored clothing, and stay out of the travel lanes at all times.
