TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE March 18, 2012 Motorcyclist Succumbs To Earlier Injuries Shortly before 10:30 A.M. yesterday, Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a crash on LA 45 in Jefferson Parish. According to the investigating Troopers, a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu was turning from the southbound left turn lane at LA 45 and Taravella Street when it struck a 2001 Harley Davidson Motorcycle. The Chevrolet Malibu was being driven by Latasha Passit (B/F, D.O.B. of 03/07/1981) of Luling, LA. The Harley Davidson was being driven by Gary Sibley (W/M, D.O.B. of 03/24/1959) of Harvey, LA. Sibley was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans and was treated for a broken pelvis and femur. The New Orleans Parish Coroner's Office contacted Troop B and advised that Mr. Sibley had died yesterday afternoon. It is still unknown whether the crash was the primary cause of his death or whether a pre-existing medical problem was present. Sibley was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Investigating Troopers report that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology tests are pending and this crash remains under investigation. Motorcyclists must wear a proper US D.O.T. helmet when operating their motorcycle on Louisiana roadways. Although not all crashes are survivable, properly utilizing safety equipment like approved motorcycle helmets and seatbelts decrease your risk of serious injury or death. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police. Contact Information: Tpr.
