Juvenile Killed in Crash on I-10 in Metairie, Louisiana

This afternoon, shortly after 12:00 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a serious injury crash on I-10 east between Cleary Avenue and Causeway Boulevard at mile post 227.8. The crash involved a 13 year old, Jeremiah Williams, from LaPlace, La.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Williams was a passenger in a 2008 Chevrolet Van, driven by Janine Sylve (B/F, age 52) of Slidell, LA and was traveling on I-10 east near Cleary Avenue. Williams was being taken to the Southeast Louisiana Hospital for medical purposes and while en-route, an altercation took place in the vehicle. Sylve pulled the van to right shoulder and stopped. Emergency services were notified and en-route to assist with Williams. Williams was able to exit the vehicle and crossed five lanes of I-10 east to the left shoulder at the concrete median. He then began to cross I-10 east back towards the right shoulder. Williams was struck by a 2005 Ford F-650 Tow Truck, driven by Joseph Prince (W/M, age 37) of Chalmette, LA, in the center right lane. Williams was transported to the Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead.

Prince submitted to a chemical test and no detectable alcohol was found in his system and blood results are pending. Speed and impairment are not suspected as factors in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law prohibits pedestrians from walking upon any interstate highway regardless of lighting and road conditions. Pedestrians walking along a non-interstate highway are required to utilize sidewalks where accessible or walk along the left shoulder as far away from the roadway as possible. Pedestrians should walk against the flow of traffic, wear light colored clothing, and stay out of the travel lanes at all times.
