New Orleans Man Charged with Manslaughter After Crash on I-10

Troop B – On Sunday, June 17, 2012 at approximately 9:10 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to several 911 emergency phone calls in reference to a battery that was being committed on a female on the right shoulder of I-10 east near Veterans Boulevard. Prior to the arrival of Louisiana State Police, the female later identified as Lucretia Hampton (B/F, age 35) of St. Bernard Parish, was killed after she was struck by two vehicles in the center and right lane of I-10 east.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Hampton was driving a 2004 Hyundai SUV and stopped on the right shoulder of I-10. Her passenger, George Washington Cummings IV (B/M, age 39) of New Orleans, LA, was committing a battery on Hampton inside the vehicle. The altercation escalated and both Hampton and Cummings exited the vehicle and the battery continued behind the SUV. Hampton attempted to flee from Cummings by running east on the shoulder of I-10 in an attempt to flag down vehicles to help her. Hampton ultimately ran across the right lane and into the center lane where she was struck by two vehicles. The first vehicle was a 1999 Chevrolet pick-up driven by Rayford Corkern (W/M, age 74) of Gretna, LA and the second vehicle was a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Joseph Causer (W/M, age 25) of Metairie, LA. Both drivers submitted to chemical tests and no alcohol was detected. There were no injuries to those drivers. Hampton was pronounced dead on the scene.

Detectives with Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations are conducting the investigation and the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab processed the scene for all evidence. The investigation is on-going and additional charges may be filed pending the findings.

Cummings was taken into custody and an arrest warrant was obtained. He was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center for 2nd Degree Battery and Manslaughter.
