Troop B - NEWS RELEASE Gretna Man Dies in Crash on Belle Chasse Highway Troop B – Last night, at approximately 12:30 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a fatal crash on LA 23 north near South Tunnel Road. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Toyota Camry, driven by Stephen Emerson (W/M, age 33) of Gretna, LA, was traveling north on LA 23 in the right lane approaching the Belle Chasse Bridge. A 2002 Freightliner and trailer, driven by James McCord (B/M, age 49) of Tyler, AL, were stopped on LA 23 north in the right lane due to traffic congestion from the bridge closure. The Toyota struck the Freightliner in the rear and Emerson was pronounced dead on the scene. Seat belts were worn by both drivers and speed is not suspected as a factor. Toxicology results are pending for both drivers. While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving, never drive while fatigued, and avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road.
