Troop B - NEWS RELEASE Louisiana State Police Arrest Two People in St. John the Baptist Parish This morning, Troopers assigned to the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations arrested Kerry D. Brown (B/M, age 40) of LaPlace, LA, on charges of Theft of Assets of an Aged Person totaling $58,041.09, Monetary Instrument Abuse and Forgery. The arrest was the result of an investigation that began in March 2012. Detectives found that Brown was employed by the St. John the Baptist Parish District Attorney’s Office in 2010 and had secondary employment as a personal injury attorney. Brown represented an elderly victim of a motor vehicle crash and the lawsuit was settled out of court in April 2010 for $99,235.14. Brown failed to notify the victim of the settlement, forged the victim’s name on numerous checks and deposited the money into his law firm’s trust account. He then wrote multiple checks to himself from that account. An arrest warrant was obtained and Brown turned himself into detectives. He was charged and booked at the St. John the Baptist Parish Correctional Center. Brown is no longer employed with the District Attorney’s Office and has been suspended from practicing law. This morning, Troopers assigned to the Bureau of Investigations also arrested Cheryl Gaudet (B/F, age 56) of Edgard, LA, on charges of Theft totaling $5,551.59, Bank Fraud, Forgery and Malfeasance in Office. Gaudet was employed by the 40th Judicial District Court as a secretary and an audit was conducted on two bank accounts held by the court. Discrepancies were found during the audit and an investigation was initiated. Detectives found that Gaudet forged checks, ultimately making herself the payee and cashing those checks without the court’s knowledge. An arrest warrant was obtained and Gaudet was charged and booked into the St. John the Baptist Parish Correctional Center.
