Troop B - NEWS RELEASE Double Fatality Crash in Jefferson Parish Troop B – This morning, shortly before 4:00 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a fatality crash on LA 541 (River Road), just west of LA 18 (4th Street). Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, driven by Wesley Johnson Jr. (B/M, age 54) of Franklin, LA, was traveling east on LA 541 approaching a right hand curve. The Blazer crossed the center line and struck an unoccupied 1999 Ford Explorer that was parked on the right shoulder. The Blazer then struck a guardrail and became airborne, coming to rest on its left side. Johnson Jr. was ejected from the vehicle. Both Johnson Jr. and a passenger, Gredrick Matthews (B/M, age 55) of Harvey, LA were pronounced dead on the scene. The crash remains under investigation; however, speed is believed to have been a factor. Seat belts were not used and toxicology results are pending the outcome of the autopsy. Troopers remind motorists to buckle up EVERY time they get into a vehicle. Wearing a seat belt gives vehicle occupants the best chance of survival during a violent crash. Seat belts not only prevent ejection, but also protect the neck and spine from serious injuries. State law requires that everyone in the vehicle wear a seat belt, regardless of seating position.
