TROOP B - NEWS RELEASE
March 30, 2012
Belle Chase Woman Killed in LA 23 Crash

Around 3:15 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatality crash on LA 23 at Cedar Lane in Belle Chasse, LA. The investigation revealed that a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling northbound on LA 23. The Jeep was being driven by Joanne Meehan (W/F, DOB 08/06/59) of Belle Chase, LA. As the Jeep traveled north on LA 23 it attempted to make a left turn onto Cedar Lane when it was struck by a 1991 Kenwood T600 (eighteen wheeler) traveling southbound. The Kenwood was being driven by Dexter Irvin (B/M 01/15/88) of New Orleans, LA. Meehan, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Plaquemines Coroner’s Office. Irvin, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was transported to University Hospital with moderate injuries.

Investigating Troopers report that alcohol impairment and speed were not contributing factors in the crash. Routine toxicology tests are pending. This crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
