| TROOP B NEWS RELEASE November 17, 2012 Interstate 310 Reopened Following Early Morning Fatality Crash St. Charles Parish, LA – Interstate 310 was closed for several hours this morning following a fatality crash that took place in the southbound lanes of the roadway approximately 0.2 miles south of Interstate 10. The crash occurred shortly before 5:00 am and took the life of 28 year old Sherrie Polly of Olla, LA. Troopers’ investigation revealed that Polly was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer south on I-310 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted to the left and struck the concrete bridge rail. After impact, the Explorer became disabled with no lights facing east across the left lane of the elevated interstate. As the vehicle remained across the roadway, Polly and five additional occupants exited the vehicle and began walking on the interstate. A short time after the initial crash, a 2012 Honda Insight, driven by 26 year old Craig Schieffler of Covington, LA, was traveling south on Interstate 310 when it impacted the disabled Explorer and Polly standing in the roadway. Polly was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Charles Parish Coroner’s Office. The additional occupants in the Ford Explorer were not injured. Investigating Troopers suspect Polly to have been impaired at the time of the crash. Schieffler was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to the River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace with moderate injuries. Impairment is not suspected and no charges are expected to be filed in relation to the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for examination. While the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge motorists to remain vigilant while driving, pay close attention to the roadway ahead, and exercise extreme caution should your vehicle become disabled. In the event your vehicle becomes disabled in the roadway, you should move it out of the travel lane as quickly as possible and warn oncoming traffic by utilizing the vehicle’s hazard lights, flares, or other warning devices. Only when safe to do so, occupants should exit the vehicle mindful of surrounding traffic and stand in a safe place off the roadway. Motorists approaching a disabled vehicle, should whenever possible move to the farthest lane away or slow to a reasonable speed if unable to change lanes.
