LSP Investigates Fatal Crash in Jefferson Parish

This morning, at approximately 1:15 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on US 61 (Airline Highway) at Beresford Street in Jefferson Parish. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 1998 Ford F150, driven by Joseph A. Spunizo (W/M, age 38) of Kenner, LA, was traveling north on US 61 approaching Beresford Street. The Ford veered right almost off the roadway, then veered left and crossed the median. It struck two vehicles that were traveling on US 61 south, a 2009 Chrysler Sebring, driven by Scott Peterson (W/M, age 46) of New Orleans, La, and a 2011 Mazda 3, driven by Nicole Bonneval (W/F, age 24) of Metairie, LA. After striking the two vehicles, the Ford continued across US 61 and overturned. Spunizo was pronounced dead on the scene, Bonneval sustained moderate injuries and was transported to the Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center and Peterson was not injured.

Spunizo was not wearing a seat belt and impairment is unknown. Toxicology results are pending the autopsy. Impairment and speed are not considered factors on the parts of Bonneval and Peterson. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana’s seat belt law requires that ALL vehicle occupants, regardless of age or seating position, remain properly restrained at all times while a vehicle is being operated on a public roadway. The single most effective thing people can do to decrease chances of death and serious injuries in crashes is to wear a seat belt. The simple task of buckling up can mean the difference between life and death.
