Five Year Old Child Killed in Crash on Jefferson Highway

Last night, at approximately 8:20 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash that took the life of a five year old, identified as Jason L. Bauer Jr. (W/M) of Jefferson, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that Jason Bauer Jr. was riding his bicycle across US 90 (Jefferson Highway) east at Newman Street while his uncle, Robert Michel Jr. (W/M, age 23) walked along side of him. As they crossed the center lane, a 1999 Saturn, driven by Steshondia Stackhouse (B/F, age 22) of New Orleans, LA, struck Jason Bauer Jr. and the bicycle. The boy was thrown from the bicycle and the bicycle became lodged underneath the Saturn. Stackhouse continued traveling on US 90 east. Michel attempted to grab the child prior to the crash and sustained minor injuries. Jason Bauer Jr. was transported to the Ochsner Main Campus Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

Witnesses to the crash were able to assist investigating troopers as to the whereabouts of the Saturn. Troopers located the vehicle and Stackhouse and placed Stackhouse under arrest for Hit and Run and No Driver’s License. Impairment is not suspected, however Stackhouse submitted to a chemical test and the results are pending. The crash remains under investigation and further criminal charges may be forthcoming.

Troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving, never drive while fatigued, and avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road. Distraction, whether behind the wheel or as a pedestrian, decreases awareness and reaction time possibly leading to life changing consequences. Louisiana State Law requires pedestrians to utilize sidewalks where accessible or walk along the left shoulder as far away from the roadway as possible. Pedestrians should walk against the flow of traffic, wear light colored clothing, and stay out of the travel lanes at all times, only crossing when it is safe to do so.
