Troop B - NEWS RELEASE Garyville Man Killed in Crash on US 61 Troop B – This afternoon, at approximately 2:30 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on US 61 at East Harding Street in St. Charles Parish that claimed the life of Hubert Bourgeois (W/M, age 83) of Garyville, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2003 Chevrolet Envoy, driven by Elizabeth Hebert (W/F, age 54) of LaPlace, LA, was traveling north on US 61 in the left lane and for unknown reasons, Hebert lost control of the vehicle. The Envoy rotated and crossed the median into the southbound lanes of travel and was struck by a 2000 Chevrolet Express, driven by Erickson Pelletier (W/M, age 20) of New Mexico. Bourgeois was the front passenger in the Envoy and was pronounced dead on the scene. Hebert was transported to the Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center in critical condition. Pelletier and two passengers were transported to Ochsner Kenner Medical Center with moderate injuries. Speed and impairment are not suspected as factors of the crash, however toxicology results are pending for Hebert and Pelletier. Bourgeois was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. All other occupants involved in the crash were properly seat-belted. The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troopers witness firsthand the remarkable difference the use of a seatbelt makes in reducing injuries and fatalities in crashes. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Contact Information: TFC Melissa Matey | |||
