Impairment and Lack of Seat Belt Use Considered Factors in Fatal Crash

Troop B – Last night, at approximately 10:20 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop B investigated a fatal crash on US 61 (Airline Highway) in Metairie, LA. Driver impairment, lack of seat belt and speed are considered factors in this crash that killed Julius Nelson Jr. (B/M, age 37) of Metairie, LA.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Nelson Jr. was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer north on US 61 near Blair Drive and for unknown reasons, traveled off the road to the right. The Explorer then re-entered the north lanes, crossed over the south lanes and Nelson Jr. overcorrected the vehicle which caused the vehicle to roll onto its roof. Nelson Jr. was ejected from the Explorer and pronounced dead on the scene. Nelson Jr. was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and toxicology results are pending an autopsy.

Making poor decisions in a vehicle, such as driving while impaired, driving while distracted, or reckless driving, leads to serious injuries and deaths across the state each year. Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death. Troopers remind motorists to NEVER get behind the wheel of a vehicle after having had anything to drink, NEVER get into a vehicle with an impaired driver, NEVER allow an impaired person to get behind the wheel, and ALWAYS wear a seat belt.
