2009 Mardi Gras Safety Tips #2

While taking part in Mardi Gras events the Louisiana State Police recommend the following tips to keep you, your family and property safe while enjoying the festivities.

1.) Parking, to put it simple “use common sense”. This may keep you from having your vehicle towed or paying a fine. Due to the limited parking, it is recommended that visitors traveling to the French Quarter, carpool or use an alternate form of transportation.

a.)Please observe the restricted parking areas in the French Quarter and at other events.

b.) Don’t park in front of fire hydrants or driveways.

c.) The New Orleans City ordinance provides for NO PARKING on the parade routes 2 HOURS PRIOR TO or 2 HOURS AFTER THE PARADES.

d.) Don’t block or interfere with the flow of traffic on streets or public sidewalks. This may interfere with the movement of emergency vehicles/personnel which are responding to calls for service or emergency situations.

e.) Observe all official parking signs. If it states “no parking” it means “NO PARKING”.

2.) Keeping your vehicle and property safe:

a.) Remove all valuables from your vehicle or move the valuables from the view of the public eye.

b.) Double-check your vehicle to ensure that it is locked, the windows are closed and that you take your keys with you.

c.) Know basic information about your vehicle such as, the vehicle’s license plate number. This will assist you and the police in determining (quickly) whether your vehicle has been towed or if your vehicle was taken.
3.) Personnel Safety:
a.) Gain knowledge about the location that you are going to and get good directions. If visiting for Mardi Gras invest in a local map or consult with the reliable locals, hotel personnel or any State Trooper or Police Officer to get this information.
b.) Avoid vacant areas, dark alleys, ECT... Travel in a group or stay with the crowd. There is safety in numbers.
c.) Avoid flashing large sums of currency when in public. This could possibly catch the eye of criminals.
d.) Carry pertinent information (I.D, credit cards, hotel room card keys) and valuables in your front pocket. This puts would be pickpockets at a disadvantage. Ladies, avoid carrying bulky purses and wearing expensive flashy jewelry. If possible, carry your pertinent information (I.D, credit cards, hotel room card keys) and valuables in your front pockets also.
e.) Avoid excessive alcohol intake. Remember, the first thing alcohol effects, is your judgment. (Thus effecting all of the above and below) A highly intoxicated person is an easy target for a criminal.

f.) The Louisiana State Police are aggressively patrolling for impaired drivers in the area. “IF YOU DRINK AND DRIVE YOU WILL GO TO JAIL”.
g.) BUCKLE UP! Louisiana State law requires the front passengers in a motor vehicle to wear their seatbelts properly.

Colonel Edmonson, his staff and the men and women of the Louisiana State Police wish everyone a safe and happy Mardi Gras.
