| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: December 24, 2008 Christmas Morning Crash on I-10 Claims the life of Three People On Christmas morning just after midnight, Louisiana State Police, Troop B investigated a three vehicle fatal crash on I-10 in Laplace, near the Belle Terre Exit. The preliminary investigation revealed that a GMC SUV and a Lincoln passenger car were traveling together on I-10 eastbound in the right at a reduced speed, due to a flat tire during light fog. The driver of an 18-wheeler which was also traveling eastbound on I-10 in the right lane observed the two vehicles ahead and attempted to brake and swerve to avoid impact but was unable to do so. The 18-wheeler struck the rear of the GMC forcing it into the rear of the Lincoln. Upon impact, the GMC became engulfed in flames. An on duty Louisiana State Trooper in the area responded to the crash and upon his arrival, the trooper assisted by a passing firefighter managed to rescue the three front passengers of the GMC. Despite their efforts, neither the trooper nor the firefighter could rescue the two young children and a female in her twenties from the rear seat of the GMC. During his rescue efforts, the trooper sustained minor burns to his hands and suffered smoke inhalation. The trooper was transported from the scene to a local hospital for medical attention. The three passengers that were rescued were transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. The crash closed I-10 in both directions from the time of the crash until approximately 8:00 AM. The crash is still under investigation at this time and all names are being withheld pending proper notification. More information will be available as the investigation progresses. We expect to have more details available this afternoon.
