Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: November 22, 2008 Double Fatality Crash in St. Bernard On Friday, November 21, 2008 at 8:20 PM, Louisiana State Police, Troop B investigated a double fatality crash on LA 46 near C Street, in St. Bernard. The crash involved a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Donald Joseph (B/M, 49 yrs), of Violet and a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer driven by an unidentified Hispanic male. The Chevrolet was traveling westbound on LA 46 at which time for an unknown reason it crossed the centerline and entered the eastbound lane of LA 46 striking the Mercury head-on . The driver of the Mercury suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet, Donald Joseph was transported to University Hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The two passengers in the Mercury, Omar Maldonado (H/M, 29 yrs) and Martin Barrientos-Guiterrez (H/M, 25 yrs) were transported to Tulane Medical Center and University Hospital with severe injuries. The driver of the Mercury has not been positively identified at this time. Speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash. Driver impairment is unknown at this time. (Results pending a toxicology examination). None of the occupants of either vehicle was wearing their seatbelt at the time of the crash. Senior Trooper Volante is continuing his investigation.
