TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

Date: March 31, 2009
Railroad Crossing Enforcement
Every year hundreds of people in Louisiana lose their lives in crashes involving motor vehicles and trains. In an effort to raise public awareness the Louisiana State Police in coordination with the St. John the Baptist Sheriff’s Office, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Gramercy Police Department and the Lutcher Police Department will join forces to conduct railroad crossing enforcement throughout thier respective areas. The enforcement will focus on motorists who disregard railroad crossing barricades and warning devices.

This enforcement effort will be conducted throughout the day on Wednesday, April 1, 2009.

Train Facts:

a.) Because of a train’s size, there is an optical illusion effect which makes the train appear that it is moving slower than what it really is.
b.) The average freight train takes approximately one mile to come to a stop.
c.) Railroad tracks are private property and it is illegal to walk on them, with the exception of designated crossing points.
d.) It is illegal to stop on the railroad tracks.

To keep you and your family safe when crossing railroad tracks follow these simple rules: Stop your vehicle, Look to see if a train is coming, Listen for the train’s whistle/horn and obey all railroad-warning devices.
