Five Vehicle Fatal Crash Closes I-10 Eastbound

Troop B- This morning just before 5:00 am State Police, Troop B investigated a five vehicle fatal crash on I-10 eastbound near Transcontinental that claimed the life of a Kenner resident.

The crash occurred at 4:45 am and involved a 1996 Ford van driven by Edward F. Bell (W/M, 72 yrs), of Kenner, La, a 2003 Chevrolet Pick-up driven by Bradley F. Burdett (W/M, 24 yrs), of Kenner, La, a 2009 Nissan Pick-up driven by Eric A. Cassisa (W/M, 24 yrs), of Kenner, La, a 2008 Dodge Charger driven by Zachary A. Hymel (W/M, 26 yrs), of Lacombe, La and a 2001 Honda Accord driven by Phillip Bernard (W/M, 23 yrs) of Lake Charles, La. The Ford van became disabled in right lane of I-10 eastbound at which time the driver exited the vehicle and stepped to its right rear side. The Chevrolet pick-up, which was also traveling eastbound on I-10 in the right lane, struck the Ford van and the driver as both vehicles made contact. Both the Ford and the Chevrolet rotated after impact, occupying the right and center lanes. The Nissan pick-up, which was also traveling eastbound on I-10 in the right lane, swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid the crash, but struck the Chevrolet. The Nissan then struck the Dodge Charger and the Honda Accord, which were traveling in the center left and left lanes of I-10 eastbound.

The driver of the Ford Van, Bell suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. No other driver or occupants were transported from the scene by EMS.

Driver impairment is unknown but not suspected. (All results pending a toxicology examination.)

Trooper J. Maumus is continuing his investigation
