| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date September 17, 2009 Local Teens Participate in a Mock Crash Troop B- Mount Carmel Academy will be hosting a “Mock Crash” to raise awareness to the dangers of driving impaired. The mock crash will take place on Friday, September 18, 2009 at Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans at 10:00 am. The Louisiana State University Interim Hospital Trauma Department, the Louisiana State Police, Troop B, the New Orleans Fire Department and the New Orleans EMS are conducting the crash in which the students will be acting. The “Mock Crash” is done in conjunction with the school’s participation in the LSU Interim Hospital / State Police “Sudden Impact Program”. The Sudden Impact Program is an eight-hour program for high school sophomores dedicated to the prevention of injuries and fatalities related to driving under the influence and seatbelt usage. The Sudden Impact program targets teens (High School sophomores) that are in the process of obtaining their drivers license. This program is a partnership between Louisiana State Police and the LSU Interim Hospital. During the program, the teens are pre tested and later post tested on the knowledge gained during the course. This course has three main components: a.) A trauma victim TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) speaks to the students about the changes in his life following a vehicle crash in which he was injured while driving impaired and unrestrained. b.) LSP presents an interactive lecture to the students in reference to the State Laws pertaining to underage DWI, seatbelt use and driver safety issues. There is also a Fatal Vision demonstration, which the students participate in. The LSP Presentation is over two hours long. Students interact with the lecture by using computers to answer questions. The answers are captured in a database and studied by physicians. c.) Medical Center of Louisiana trauma personnel speaks to the students about the physical effects that alcohol and drugs have on the human body that directly effect driving. A color pictorial is presented showing the relationship between trauma injuries and the non-use of the seatbelts and driving under the influence. The students then tour the ICU and the ER. This presentation has received national recognition and a national award from the National Governor’s Highway Safety Representatives. As part of the program, the participating schools have the option of competing for a $3500.00 scholarship, which is funded by the Louisiana State Troopers Association, LSU Interim Hospital and the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency. To compete for the scholarship the participating schools had to complete the following criteria: a.) A three-year commitment to attend the Sudden Impact Program. b.) Development of a drive sober / seatbelt campaign by the 2009 sophomore class. c.) Presentation of campaign to a parent session, 8th grade class, and sophomore class. The presentation should increase awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence and lack of seatbelt usage. d.) Development of a Public Service Announcement to be distributed to the local media market through the Louisiana State Police Public Affairs Section. e.) Participation in a mock crash, with student involvement in the development of the script and facilitation of the event. f.) Development of a SADD chapter or comparable support group. g.)
