Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP B- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: August 5, 2009 Fatal Crash in East Jefferson Claimed the Life of a Pedestrian Troop B- On Wednesday, August 5, 2009 shortly after 3:00 PM, Louisiana State Police investigated a fatal crash in East Jefferson that claimed the life of a pedestrian. The crash occurred on U.S. 90 (Jefferson Hwy) near Terrace Street in Jefferson, LA. The crash involved a 2004 Chevrolet pick-up driven by Brock Hartley (W/M, 31 yrs) of Kenner, LA and a pedestrian, Gregory Geary (B/M, 60 yrs) of Jefferson, LA. The pedestrian, Geary was crossing U.S. 90 from south to north near the intersection of Terrace Street, outside of the crosswalk. As the pedestrian was crossing, he cleared the right and center lanes of U.S. 90 eastbound barely missing oncoming vehicles in the process. Geary then proceeded into the left lane of U.S. 90 eastbound, entering the path of the Chevrolet. The Chevrolet then struck Geary with its right front fender, knocking him to the ground. As a result of the crash the pedestrian, Geary suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The investigation revealed that the driver of the Chevrolet, Hartley was traveling 55 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone. Hartley was cited for speeding. The investigation also revealed that Geary was in violation of failing to yield to vehicles on the roadway. Driver impairment is not suspected. Troop B is continuing its investigation.
